You are Unique

You are Unique

Have you ever thought about how unique you are?

Did you know that our bodies’ very makeup speaks to the unique way that God made us?

The Bible says, “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous – and how well I know it.” (Psalm 139:13-14 NLT)

We know this is true. It’s proven in science and scripture.

He numbered the hairs on our heads (Luke 12:7).

No two people have the same fingerprint. That blows my mind to consider that over 7 billion people live on earth’s human population, and not one of them has the identical pattern that you or I have.

It doesn’t just end there. We are told that one’s DNA is strikingly different as well. No two people have the same identical DNA. Even our irises and retinas are unique to us.

So, tell me this.

If God put so much effort into making each of us uniquely and personally different, why do we spend so much time trying to be like others?

Why do we try to dress like them?

Why do we want to like what they like?

Why do we try to mimic their talents and gifts (not realizing that we have our own)?

I mean, if Oprah can be Oprah, why can’t I?

But this is the thing — God made each one of us uniquely different!

The scripture above says that He made us “wonderfully complex.” In Ephesians, Paul tells us that we are “God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

So, this means that my path is not my sister’s path, my talents do not have to be her talents, and my passions do not necessarily have to align with hers.

Sis, it’s no accident that you’re different.

God made you that way with intent. Those things about you, your life, quirks, personality, presence, character, pursuits, insights, and capabilities are what make you unique, and they are your purpose. They are the things that you have been given, so that you could answer a problem here on earth.

In the devotional Believing Bigger, Marshawn Daniels says, “Purpose is why God needs you and how God made you. Calling is where God is sending you.

Let’s take it a step further by discussing purpose, calling, role and expression.

Your purpose is You. Don’t overthink that. Your very presence in the earth is your purpose.

Your calling is God’s divine invitation for your participation in the reason for your creation.

Your roles are the areas of responsibility that God calls you to certain seasons, for specific reasons.

Your expression is the unique way in which God calls you to carry out a non-unique role.

Women of Judah, your existence was planned before you were born.  God uniquely crafted you with a unique gift for a unique purpose and people.  Don’t doubt your presence. Embrace your creator’s intent and give the world the gift of you as only you can.

This is part of our Learning to Love Yourself series.

Next up is your wholeness.

Until then, I want you to wake up every day and tell yourself: “My uniqueness is epic and worth celebrating.”
